Glossier: Worth The Hype?

When I first discovered beauty blog, Into The Gloss, it was like Christmas. I no longer needed to troll Sephora aisles asking associates relentless questions, it was all right here, endless product reviews, tips and tricks from the world's most genetically blessed beings. So when I heard Emily Weiss launched Glossier, her own makeup and skincare line, I was curious to say the least.

While I found the packaging and stickers slightly suspect I loved the slogan "Skin first. Makeup second." I'm extremely partial to my own skincare routine but I was excited to test their makeup and check out their new West Hollywood store. Here are my thoughts.

PRIMING MOISTURIZER

I am very particular about my skincare but at the convincing of my sister I tried the Priming Moisturizer... and I loved it. I used this on top of my daytime moisturizer and then applied foundation. It was very hydrating, so if you run oily this might be too much for you.

SKIN TINT

My go-to foundation is Nars and Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer however, Glossier's Skin Tint is very impressive. It comes in five shades so I tried medium which has worked well even when I've had a tan. It is very light so I typically use it during the day to subtly brighten and even out my skin tone. If you're looking for full coverage it's definitely not for you.

STRETCH CONCEALER

I REALLY wanted to love the stretch concealer because the texture and color are SO satisfying, but this one fell flat for me. I wanted something to use under my eyes and on blemishes but the oils made it a little too creamy and shiny. I found it settled into creases which was less than ideal. It is very buildable though, I almost felt like it could be a foundation.

BOY BROW

It kinda felt like this was the year of the brow or maybe I'm just late to the party. I never saw my brows as anything more than two randomly placed patches of hair on my face that needed an occasional tweezing. However, after trying boy brow I see what a difference this subtle definition can make. It comes in four different shades so I chose brown and used a light hand to brush it on like mascara. Sometimes a little too much product comes out is a tad frustrating. Next I'll buy the clear and try playing around with shape instead of pigment.

LASH SLICK

I have a love-hate relationship with mascara. The only mascara I found that didn't manage to settle in under or above my eyes was this tubing one by Trish McEvoy. So usually I'll just curl my lashes and dab on Aquaphor to keep them curled and slightly defined. Glossier's Lash Slick offers a very natural look, almost feathery. The brush is very precise and provides a modest, even coat. I have thin lashes so I usually like more volume but this did provide length and definition and NEVER smudged. I even liked the results without curling my lashes.

CLOUD PAINT

I got into cheek stains when I discovered Benetint and then fell in love with this gel tint by Pixi my mom gave me to which gives a subtle highlighter gloss effect. I decided to try Cloud Paint when I saw the amazing shades. I bought Dawn and Storm. Dawn was a bit too coral for my skin tone, but I'm siked to try it when I have a tan. Storm is a deep rose/mauve color and a little goes a VERY long way. I started mixing it with my Pixi gel tint and find it to be the perfect shade.

HALOSCOPE

Haloscope was the product I was most excited to try. It's a highlighter stick that comes in three shades - topaz, quartz and moonstone. I bought quartz, which is a sheer, pearlescent hue and apply it on my cheekbones, the bridge of my nose, cupids bow, brow bones, collar bones and shoulder (depending on the top). Initially I would just glide it across directly but found it was causing some clogged pores around my cheeks and now use my finger to dab that area instead. I want to try Topaz next for a summery look.

BODY HERO DAILY OIL WASH

I smelled this body wash in the store and was totally mind blown. The scent reminds me of the beach but not over the top tropical (this should have been the scent of their signature fragrance). The oil claims to be more hydrating than typical body washes bc it works like a magnet to attract grime then lifts it off of the skin rather than stripping it. I must say, it does just that, my skin is always insanely soft and dewy after using. Consider me sold. My only gripe is the packaging, the pump leaks quite a bit of product.

GENERATION G LIPSTICK

I love this sheer matte lipstick especially as someone who doesn't consider themselves a lipstick junky, but they are buildable with a variety of shades and could certainly suit someone who is. I've tried them all (and they are ALL gorg) but I always gravitate to Crush and Zip. It goes on like a stain so it still looks natural but just your lips on their best day. I top it off w Aquaphor to add some shine but I also liked their Lip Gloss I just thought my Aquaphor did the same job for a fraction of the cost. My only issue w Gen G was the packaging. The cheap plastic tube cracked in the same place on every one I purchased and caused the product to dry out BUT this was recently fixed! Haza! Better packaging and they reformulated for a little more moisture.

GLOSSIER YOU FRAGRANCE

I honestly hated it. I received a small sample in the mail and couldn't even entertain trying it on for a day to see if maybe it would grow on me. I couldn't understand why they wouldn't have bottled their body hero scent?! Glossier describes the scent as a 'Skin smell enhancer' and that because you are the first ingredient, it smells differently on everyone. The notes are include ambrette, ambrox, musk, iris root, and pink pepper. Earlier this year Glossier launched the fragrance as a solid. Maybe it's me, or maybe it's You? Alas, Glossier You is a hard no for me.
