Good Molecules: The Budget-Friendly Skincare Brand That Rivals The Ordinary?

Updated: Jul 29, 2022

The Ordinary is the most buzz-worthy skincare brand of 2019. I've heard countless reputable friends, blogs, and celeb makeup artists recommend this line. However, if you haven't heard of The Ordinary, it's an a la carte approach to skincare that offers affordable, highly concentrated, single-note and minimal ingredient products designed to mix and match to create a custom regimen. It requires a little research to figure out which products are best for your skin type, but the quality and price are impossible to beat... that is, until now.

Meet Good Molecules, a brand launched this year by Beautylish, a platform turned product line, that recently released this notable collection. It's the first brand I've come across that appears to be comparable in price to The Ordinary. The collection includes 6 products total, whereas The Ordinary has a far wider range, but the three products in particular that I have been interested in purchasing from The Ordinary, The Buffet, Niacinimide and Squalane Oil, are also available with Good Molecules.

To figure out whether this competitor is worth testing out, I came across this highly informative Youtube video by Allura Beauty (def subscribe!) who breaks down how each Good Molecules product stacks up against The Ordinary and which is the better buy (starts at the 4:50 mark), or scroll down for my comparative summary of the products I am most curious about:

The Ordinary's The Buffet vs. Good Molecules Super Peptide Serum

What do they do?

Both products have an impressive amount of peptides that target fine lines, wrinkles and dullness to hydrate, brighten and smooth skin for a healthy, youthful-looking glow.

The Buffet

$14.80 (1 oz.)

How is it different? Has a little more glycerin which is essential for hydration.

Super Peptide Serum

$12.00 (1 oz.)

How is it different? Contains potential skin irritants like bergamot, a volatile citrus oil that can cause irritation.

Winner: The Ordinary's The Buffet

The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% vs. Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum

What do they do? Both deliver comparable amounts of the key ingredient, Niacinamide (second on both ingredient lists), to minimize pore size and uneven tone and texture.

Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

$5.90 (1 oz.)

How is it different? Contains 1% Zinc which acts as an anti-inflammatory and balances oiliness.

Niacinamide Serum

$6.00 (1 oz.)

How is it different? Contains more hydrating ingredients than The Ordinary's option and does not contain zinc.

Winner: It's a tie, both are comparable in efficacy and price. If you tend to be more oily, then go for The Ordinary, more dry, then try Good Molecules.

The Ordinary's 100% Plant-Derived Squalane vs. Good Molecules Squalane Oil

What do they do? Plant-derived squalane oil is extremely hydrating and it replenishes fatty acids and antioxidants to the skin.

100% Plant-Derived Squalane

$7.90 (1 oz.)

How is it different? Contains twice the product for less $$.

Squalane Oil

$8 (.44 oz.)

How is it different? Contains less than half the product for more $$.

Winner: The Ordinary's 100% Plant-Derived Squalane
