Best East LA Bars

Updated: May 15, 2019

I used to live up the hill from this bar, which was both amazing and problematic. Opened by the owners of Ostrich Farm (across the street on Sunset in Echo Park), this mezcal bar is perfect for a date or catching up w A friend, singular, this spot's not conducive to big groups. Great cocktails, I love their Mezcal Old Fashioned, Mexican Firing Squad and the Solano. Try the plantain chips and guac (guac's heavy on the garlic, FYI), shishitos, ceviche and tostadas. Has outdoor seating and now serves Happy Hour (M-F 4-7p). (Image via Eater)

Originally a wine and beer bar, this hidden gem in Echo Park now serves amazing cocktails—try the Oaxcan Mule. One of the best Happy Hour's (M-F 9a-5p) which includes $5 house wine, $5 draft beer and $7 margs & old-fashioned's. Lounge vibe with couches, GREAT service, no tv's or outdoor seating. Oyster bar and restaurant on Sunset in Silverlake. Super bright and sunny, great for happy hour (every day 4-6p) or brunch (10a-4p Sat/Sun). Food is awesome, I had their Happy Hour 1/2 dozen oysters and Rose for $15. They also have outdoor seating on the back patio. (Image via Eater)

If you loved Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, then you will love this place. Self-described as, "beer, snacks, records" so if you define nuts and olives as a sufficient snack selection, then that's a fairly accurate assessment. It's a dark, intimate, moderately loud wine bar with a great selection and super knowledgable bartenders, if like me, you struggle to navigate wine. Zagat rated as top 15 LA wine bars. I particularly like their orange wines. No Happy Hour, womp, womp. (Image via Zagat)

Trendy oyster bar in Silverlake with a restaurant downstairs (with outdoor seating and they take reservations), or a cocktail and raw bar upstairs. The oysters and cocktails here are amazing and the bartenders are super nice. A little on the pricier side (I got their daily dozen oysters for $32), but their Happy Hour (M-F 5-7p) is also on the weekends (Sat/Sun 3-7p). (Image via ProjectMPlus)

I met up with a guy as a networking connection and felt this was a little too romantic of a vibe, then I took my mom here for a nightcap and it was insanely packed and loud...maybe I'm fucking Goldilocks, but I have yet to hit this beer & wine bar at the right time. A lot of people love this place, I think its fine, not my fav but definitely worth checking out before settling for Mohawk Bend across the street. (Image via Eater)

I went here on a first date and found it sort of embarrassingly romantic. Call me a grandma, but I had to use the light on my phone to read the small plates menu—cheese plate's amazing btw—but the darker picture is a far more accurate depiction. Like El Prado, their wine menu is on a board above the bar and bartenders make suggestions based on what you like or what you will be eating. This is a great spot in Los Feliz for a date, just maybe not a first date...at least for me. (Image1 via TheInfatuation, Image2 via AllKindsOfYum)

Classic, French bistro—outdoor seating, rude waiters, amazing mussels and fries (frites? whatever). If you're ok with being ignored by waitstaff that act as though your every request is the most annoying thing they've ever heard, then this is a great option for you. Luckily, more Eastside bars are offering Happy Hour, but this is pretty much the best one in town (4-7p daily) $5 wine, cocktails and bar snacks. I love coming here before hitting the old-school movie theater next door. (Image1 vialosangeles, Image2 Iamnotastalker)

Not sure why this spot doesn't get more love. It's got a Moroccan/gypsy vibe? SUCH a cool outdoor area. No Happy Hour, but they do have $1 oyster night and a small plates menu separate from their dinner menu. Amazing cocktails and wine selection. (Image1 @jladish, Image2 UrbanDaddy)

This is an unassuming destination for a beverage, but if you're looking for something super low-key, solo or find yourself hungry in Echo Park at a strange time of day, this insanely good lunch spot is open until 7:30p and now serves wine and beer with Happy Hour (T-F) from 4-6p. Do yourself a favor and get the HH fish tacos, the Western, Coupe, Banh Mi, honestly any sandwich! (Image via @trencherla)
