Perusing the self help section of a bookstore is like buying a plunger in public; a shameful task for an unavoidable issue. Both of which I have fallen victim, the latter being a story for another day.
For reasons, some of which I can understand, there's a stigma that persists about the self help genre. Many believe it lacks a certain credibility, that it's based on superstition, or at worst, that it's simply snake oil. I too have my reservations about this wild west industry, but I've come across a handful of gems that have been helpful in difficult times of my life like a breakup, the loss of a loved one, depression, and yes, even buying a plunger in public. Here are my go-to's.
Jerico Mandybur is a tarot card reader, reiki healer, Girlboss's editorial director and overall badass. I binged the entire Self Service podcast in one weekend. FYI newer episodes (starting October 2018 on) have a different host but I really prefer Jerico. She covers a range of interesting topics like depression, sex, sobriety, meditation, grieving, menstruation, WTF is mercury retrograde (FINALLY! LIKE, THANK YOU!), crystals, A LOT. Her guests are super interesting like this one with Bri Luna founder of, The Hoodwitch, a quick and dirty on crystals and each episode includes a horoscope reading from their resident astrologer. Sometimes we meet truly special people or have a particularly enlightening experience that opens us up to the possibility and optimism of our future, Lacy Phillips considers these "Expanders". The first podcast I listened to was an interview with Jenna Zoe talking about Human Design. I had no clue who Jenna Zoe or what Human Design was, but listening to her experience left me with a new inspiration about coming to terms with the things that have scared the absolute shit out of me my entire life. It's no secret that GOOP's got some haters. Gwyneth Paltrow's controversial brand carries an extensive (and very expensive) aspirational clothing and supplement line as well as her famous cookbooks. I also had some preconceived notions about the brand, but couldn't NOT give the podcast a try when I read the undeniable roster of guest speakers: Oprah, Julia Roberts, Ashley Graham, SJP, Dr. Steven Gundry, Marianne Williamson, Stella McCartney, Chrissy Teigen, Misty Copeland, and a bunch of other doctors, psychologists, nutritionists and functional health people who's name I didn't know but they went to Harvard, or Stanford, or Yale or Oxford or some other reputable place so clearly they know something. My point is, say what you may about ole Gwynny, but I find every single episode absolutely fascinating and I have yet to skip one.
